NOTE: This is a sidebar to UMNS story #554.

Statewide ballots on gambling issues in the Nov. 7 elections included the
following:

Arkansas - A constitutional amendment expanding gambling in the state was
defeated.

Colorado - A referendum to allow the state lottery to join in multistate
lotteries such as Powerball was passed by voters.

Massachusetts - A ballot joined by animal activists to eliminate dog racing
was narrowly defeated.

Maine - A proposal to bring video poker machines to Scarborough Downs
racetrack was defeated.

South Carolina - Voters narrowly approved a referendum to permit a state-run
lottery.

South Dakota - A constitutional amendment to ban video poker games was
defeated, and betting limits at the Deadwood Casino will be increased.
