LEXINGTON, Ky. (DNS) -- Lexington Theological Seminary President Richard
L. Harrison, Jr., will leave his post at the end of June 2001 to become
pastor of Seventh Street Christian Church, Richmond, Va.

Harrison said that he had been considering a change in ministry and that
it had become clear that he was being called to serve as a church pastor.

"I have made this decision for many reasons, beginning with a response to
a call to a new form of ministry and a particular place for ministry that
is challenging and encouraging," he said. "In my new position I anticipate
having far more opportunities to teach, preach, and serve as a pastor. I
will also be able to give time to my work as a historian."

During his tenure as president, LTS has undergone several major
construction projects, including the refurbishing of its on-campus housing,
classrooms, and administrative offices. It has begun a major continuing
education program, the Disciples Leadership Center, for lay persons and
clergy. The seminary also called a new dean and several new faculty
members.

Harrison is a native of Washington, N.C. He has taught at LTS, the
University of the South at Sewanee, Tenn., Eureka (Ill.) College, and
Vanderbilt Divinity School, Nashville. He has been in academic
administration for 15 years, seven as dean of the Disciples Divinity House,
Vanderbilt University, and eight years as president of Lexington
Theological Seminary.

Harrison and his wife, Mona, are the parents of two daughters: Meredith, a
student at the seminary, and Laura, 14.

A search committee will be formed by the LTS board of trustees in hopes of
filling the vacancy before the beginning of the 2001-2002 academic year.
