	KANSAS CITY, MO. (DNS) -- A minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of
Christ), influential in the history of African American Disciples has died
at the age of 102.  The Rev. Sere Stacy Myers died in Kansas City, Mo.
December 14. 

	Myers was born September 25, 1898 in Clay County, Mississippi, to former
slaves Frank and Dora Dean Myers.  After elementary school in Clay County,
he attended high school and junior college at the Southern Christian
Institute, Edwards, Mississippi, a Disciples mission school, and received
military training at Howard University in Washington, D.C.  He was ordained
at the Institute in 1922 and served his first congregation in Austin,
Texas. In his years in ministry, Myers served congregations in Texas,
Oklahoma, Tennessee and Missouri, serving for more than 40 years as pastor
of West Paseo Christian Church in Kansas City. 

	In the 1940s, the Rev. Myers served as president of the National Christian
Missionary Convention (NCMC), a national organization of historical state
Black Church works.  He is regarded as the architect of the 1960 merger of
the staff and services of the NCMC with the United Christian Missionary
Society of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  He was also
instrumental in the 1969 merger of the NCMC and the International
Convention of the Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ). 

	Myers was married to the former Martha Ann Underwood, who preceded him in
death.  They had four children.  The Rev. Myers had eleven grandchildren
and nine great-grandchildren at the time of his death.
