NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) -- While the month of May brings flowers, it also
ushers in the annual conference season for the United Methodist Church.

The 65 regional gatherings in the United States will begin May 18-19 when
the Red Bird Missionary Conference convenes in Beverly, Ky. They will end
with the Virginia Conference in Virginia Beach and the Kentucky Conference
in Louisville, both meeting June 21-24.

Some annual conference sessions outside the United States begin this month
and are scheduled throughout 2001. Dates for the Africa conferences are
incomplete.

Many of the U.S. conferences will have new bishops presiding because of the
election and assignment of episcopal leaders at five jurisdictional
conferences last July. Thirteen of the 50 active bishops in the United
States will be presiding over conference sessions for the first time since
their election.   

Annual conference members, including lay and clergy representatives from
every local church, will approve budgets, receive reports from conference
boards and agencies, adopt programs of mission and ministry, and address
social concerns.   
  
During the sessions, annual appointments of all clergy members of the
conference will be announced, new deacons and elders will be ordained, and
candidates for ordination will be approved.

One order of business is coming before all annual conferences -
consideration of 11 amendments to the church's constitution (see UMNS story
#114).
