NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) -- Eleven students working toward doctorate degrees
in Christian education will split $36,000 in the 2001-2002 academic year.

Ten have been awarded John Q. Schisler Graduate awards; one has been given
the Rosalie Bentzinger Graduate Award.

Given by the United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry's
Office of Loans and Scholarships, the Schisler awards total $31,000; the
Bentzinger grant is $5,000.

The late John Q. Schisler was executive secretary of the former Methodist
Board of Education's local church division. Graduate students receive the
annual award on the basis of academic standing, leadership ability,
character, need, vocational goals in Christian education, and commitment to
Christ and the mission of the church.  Selections for the awards are made by
the board's section of deacons and diaconal ministries. 

The 2001-2002 Schisler recipients are:

	*	Chiyona A. Bourne, Methodist Theological School in Ohio,
Delaware, Ohio;
	*	Paige Eaves, Candler School of Theology, Atlanta;
	*	Dan L. Gray Jr., the Divinity School, Duke University,
Durham, N.C.;
	*	Melissa L. Griffin, Asbury Theological Seminary, Wilmore,
Ky.;
	*	William L. Podschun, Perkins School of Theology, Dallas;
	*	Cheryl A. Skinner, the Divinity School, Duke University,
Durham, N.C.;
	*	Nancy A. Wack, Saint Paul School of Theology, Kansas City,
Mo.; and
	*	Latoya D. Wilson, Perkins School of Theology, Dallas.

Receiving the Bentzinger award is Sara Jane Fleming, a student at
Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, Evanston, Ill. The grant was named
for a retired executive in the Board of Higher Education and Ministry's
former division of diaconal ministry. The scholarship is awarded to a United
Methodist student pursuing a doctorate degree in Christian education at a
graduate theological school.

Fleming is the director of adult ministries and Christian education at
Kirkwood (Mo.) United Methodist Church. She plans to teach faith formation
through the arts.

"God calls me through baptism into a priestly ministry that offers hope,
compassion and justice to all persons through Jesus Christ," she said. "I
seek to encourage others to experience and know God in ordinary, everyday
life. By doing so, I hope to encourage persons to see their lives and the
world they are engaged in as vocation, called by God."

Fleming received a bachelor of arts degree from Concordia University in St.
Louis and will receive a master's of arts degree in June from
Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. She is a candidate for deacon's
orders in the Missouri East Annual Conference.
