BERG RE-ELECTED BISHOP OF ELCA NORTHWESTERN SYNOD OF WISCONSIN

     CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The Rev. Robert D. Berg, was re-elected May 31
to a six-year term as bishop of the Northwest Synod of Wisconsin of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) at the synod assembly in
Eau Claire, Wis.  Berg, 53, has been serving as bishop of the synod
since 1995.
     Berg was re-elected on the first ballot for bishop with 285 votes,
over the Rev. Mark A. Olson, Hope Lutheran Church, Eau Claire, Wis., who
received 21 votes.  Two others tied for third with five votes each.
There were 37 names on the nominating ballot.
     Berg, a native of Eau Claire, Wis., served as senior pastor at
Chetek Lutheran Church in Chetek, Wis., before he was elected bishop.
He served congregations in Zeeland and Kintyre, N.D., and Cumberland and
Balsam Lake, Wis.
     Berg earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and sociology in
1970 from the University of Wisconsin in Eau Claire.  He completed
seminary at Luther Theological Seminary, St. Paul, Minn., and was
ordained in 1979.
     Berg and his wife Roxanne have two adult daughters.
     The ELCA Northwest Synod of Wisconsin has 105,139 baptized members
in 213 congregations.  Its offices are located in Rice Lake, Wis.
