Committee awards grants to eight schools for teaching of the Bible

LOUISVILLE - Eight colleges related to the Presbyterian Church (USA) will
receive a financial boost for innovate Bible study programs, thanks to the
National Ministries Division Committee (NMDC).

The committee on Thursday announced the names of eight colleges and
universities selected to receive Grants for Teaching of the Bible. The
institutions will share $76,400 in funding to support new courses, purchase
Bible study resources and scholarships for students traveling to the Middle
East.

The grants are distributed annually by the PC(USA)'s Office of Colleges and
Universities in the Higher Education program area to support related
colleges, universities and secondary schools.

In March, a small committee composed of representatives from the faculty and
staff of PC(USA)-related colleges and universities and representatives from
the denomination met to select the 2001- 2002 recipients.

These projects were approved for grants:

* Alma College, Alma, MI: $10,000 for scholarships for Mid-East Biblical
Studies Travel seminar.

* Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte, NC : $10,000 for development of an
Arts Expressive Program to explore the relevance of the Bible to beliefs and
values in the African-American Community.

* Maryville College, Maryville, TN: $10,000 for financial support for Middle
Eastern Biblical studies tour.

*  Montreat College, Montreat, NC: $10,000 for Biblical studies faculty
continuing education.

* Presbyterian College, Clinton, SC: $10,000 for student-led residence hall
ministry program.

* Sheldon Jackson College, Sitka, AK: $6,400 for a lecture series.

* Tusculum College, Greenville, TN: $10,000 for service learning immersion
course.

* Westminister College, Salt Lake, UT: $10,000 for a retreat to study
Biblical perspectives on diversity.
