A Church Hall Full of Probationers
Beng-kah Presbyterian Church in Taipei was the venue for a June 3rd
gathering of over 400 people, many of them on probation, at a meeting
with a strong anti-drug message. The activity was billed as a concert
which also included many lighthearted skits and emotionally moving
musical performances to give spiritual uplift to all who came.
The church entered a contractural arrangement with the prosecutor's
office at the Taipei District Court in 1999 to provide one such activity
a year. This year the contract was re-negotiated to provide a second
concert. The first was recently held, and another will be offered in
December. More than just providing the facility, the congregation led
the program and drew in neighbors.
This activity is only one facet of the many sorts of community
ministry and outreach being conducted by many Presbyterian congregations
all over Taiwan in concert with government, cultural and environmental
organizations.
