Let's listen!

by Marj Carpenter

LOUISVILLE, June 9 — Marian McClure, director of the Worldwide
Ministries Division, held a pre-assembly event for ecumenical delegates from
all over the world.

There were no speeches from the church, but rather from the delegates who
came from Africa, Asia, the Middle East, South America, Mexico and the
Caribbean.

Each delegate was allowed to express the greatest concerns in the country
he or she represented. Leading the list of needs was caring and praying. The
list also included the need for more evangelism, for education, for
leadership training, and for medical care. There were pleas for Christians
who have been jailed for their beliefs, concerns about gay and lesbian
issues, and problems in some countries concerning visas.

One delegate laughingly reported that he was an attorney and said that
those who issued visas in his country did not believe an attorney had any
right to go to a church meeting. He had to come to the General Assembly
through Canada.
