PHEWA honors congregations for their outreach ministries

by Frank Buhrman

LOUISVILLE, June 11 – A Massachusetts church that has literally risen
from ashes – twice – and an Ohio congregation that reaches out
to neighbors in its backyard and across the world were honored Monday at the
Presbyterian Health, Education and Welfare Association event here.

PHEWA also presented its newest award to a Chicago church that has made
members with serious mental illness feel at home.

The awards were presented during the 213th General Assembly of the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), which is meeting in the Kentucky International
Convention Center.

Fourth Presbyterian in South Boston, Mass., received the Urban Network of
Christian Leaders' 2001 Urban Ministry Award for conducting an array of
service ministries far beyond what might be expected of a 108-member
congregation. The church, which was rebuilt after fires in 1885 and 1963,
thrives on volunteer support in the low-to-middle income neighborhood where
it reaches out to the poor, the young, the abused, the addicted and the
afflicted.

College Hill Community Church in Dayton, Ohio, received the COMANO Award
from the Community Ministries and Neighborhood Organization. Criteria
include the ability "to go beyond common acts of charity, to form effective
partnerships between church and community, and to maintain a steady focus
towards transformation.

College Hill directs numerous outreach projects to a nearby neighborhood
that is among Dayton's poorest, and it partners with the Evangelical Church
of Ghana to sustain a medical facility.

Edgewater Presbyterian Church of Chicago received the inaugural Florence I.
Kraft Award from the Presbyterian Serious Mental Illness Network. Presenter
Brenda Gales characterized the church as one "whose members with mental
illness ARE members," adding that they serve the church "in all capacities.

The Kraft Award is the newest presented by one of PHEWA's 11 networks. It
honors a founder of the association. Florence Kraft was herself present to
see the first award made.

A "full house" audience of PHEWA members and supporters attended the event,
held by an organization that pursues ministries of justice and compassion.
Executive Director Nancy Troy called PHEWA "the feet of the church."
