Committee approves overture in response to 'Left Behind' series

by Jane Hines

LOUISVILLE, June 11 - The Assembly Committee on Theological Issues,
Educational Institutions has voted to recommend Assembly approval of an
overture from Sierra Blanca Presbytery (01-25) concerning the currently
popular "Left Behind" series of books and movie. The overture would
communicate to pastors and sessions throughout the Presbyterian Church that
the stories are "based upon an interpretation of the Bible (specifically the
book of Revelation) which is not in accord with our Reformed understanding
of Covenant Theology."

The overture would encourage pastors and sessions to conduct studies in
their own congregations that "give a Reformed understanding of the book of
Revelation and show how this is different from that of the dispensationalist
view."

As suggested by the overture advocate, Shannon Webster, executive presbyter
from Sierra Blanca, the committee voted to add a comment that would provide
a resource from the Office of Theology and Worship titled "Between
Millennia" for the use of congregations.

The vote in the committee was 43-12 to approve the overture.
