SCHNEIDER RE-ELECTED LUTHERAN BISHOP OF WASHINGTON, D.C.

     CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The Rev. Theodore F. Schneider was re-elected
June 8 to a six-year term as bishop of the Metropolitan Washington,
D.C., Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) at the
synod assembly at the Eisenhower Inn, Gettysburg Pa.  Schneider, 66, has
been bishop of the synod since 1995.
     Schneider was re-elected on the fourth ballot for bishop with 202
votes, over the Rev. Sherman G. Hicks, First Trinity Lutheran Church,
Washington, D.C., and former bishop of the ELCA  Metropolitan Chicago
Synod, who received 80 votes; and the Rev. Ronald G. Qualley, Lord of
Life Lutheran Church, Fairfax, Va., with 52 votes.  There were 45 names
on the nominating ballot.
     Born in Portsmouth, Va., Schneider is a graduate of Roanoke
College, Salem, Va., one of 28 ELCA higher education institutions, and
the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, one of eight ELCA
seminaries.  After his ordination in 1959, he served as pastor of
congregations in Millheim and Lancaster, Pa.  Prior to assuming the role
of bishop in 1995, he served nine years as senior pastor at Saint Luke
Lutheran Church, Silver Spring, Md.
     Schneider and his wife, Doris, have two grown children.
     The ELCA Metropolitan Washington, D.C., Synod has 39,530 baptized
members in 75 congregations and two mission congregations.  Its offices
are in the District of Columbia.
