Polity Committee deals with per capita
by John Fileatreau
LOUISVILLE, June 12 - The Assembly Committee on Polity voted on June 12 to
amend the action it had taken the previous day on Overture 01-1, which would
have given presbyteries the authority to order sessions to pay their
per-capita assessments.
The committee added the comment, "Per capita is one of the sinews of our
covenantal relationship. We believe that relationship is voluntary rather
than mandatory. Nonetheless, we urge sessions to contribute per-capita,
especially in seasons of disagreement, uncertainty and controversy. Together
we shoulder the burden and blessing of our bonds."
The Assembly Committee on Polity also:
* Approved Overture 01-58 directing the Office of the General Assembly to
prepare an index of scriptural allusions for The Book of Order, beginning
with the 2003-2004 edition, but amended it to say that the index will not be
part of The Book of Order, but instead will be made available with it.
* Disapproved Overture 01-56, which would have directed the Committee on the
Office of the General Assembly to create a task force to study "the policy
regarding consistency in the Constitution."
* Disapproved a commissioner resolution that would have urged all church
sessions to publish their meeting agendas, topics of discussion and results,
for their congregations.
