Presbyterians for Renewal host Assembly breakfast

by Emett Barfield

LOUISVILLE, June 13 - Presbyterians for Renewal hosted a breakfast for
several hundred of their members and friends Wednesday morning.

The Rev. Sue Babovec presented The Lydia Fund award for the year 2001. This
award is a grant for women who have distinguished themselves in service to
the church and are preparing to enter the ministry in the Presbyterian
Church (U. S. A.). For the sixth time in the 15 year history of the award,
two individuals were selected. They are Esther Kim of Fuller Theological
Seminary and Fairlight Collins-Jones, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.

The Rev. Marian McClure, director, World Wide Ministries Division, presented
the Bell-McKay Award for distinguished service to the church in the area of
international mission. This year's recipients were Dr. Frank and Mrs. Hope
Arnold.

Rev. McClure said "Mission service for a couple is a couple working
together." In their 33 years of mission work in Brazil, this couple has
certainly justified that opinion. In their response to the award, the
laureates expressed their appreciation for the recognition of their service,
spoke of their on-going work with Brazilians in the United States, and
called for rededication of the members of the Presbyterian Church (U. S. A.)
to the opportunities for mission in Brazil and throughout the world.

Due to the illness of the keynoter, Dr. Roberta Hestenes, international
minister at large for World Vision, the acclaimed Biblical scholar, the Rev.
Kenneth Bailey, presented an in-depth examination on the parable of the
"Nobleman in the Far Country" (Luke 19:11-27). Bailey concluded his study
by declaring: "Faithfulness never fails; it reproduces itself."

Moderator Jack Rogers visited the breakfast and brought greetings. Included
in his remarks, Moderator Rogers gave an explanation of his response to the
question concerning the "Confessing Church" during the "Question and Answer"
period of the moderator's election. He reaffirmed his commitment to be the
moderator of the whole church. Those present expressed appreciation for his
appearance.
