Hispanic Presbyterians greet newly appointed official

by John Filiatreau

LOUISVILLE, June 13 - About 60 Spanish-speaking Presbyterians who attended
the annual Hispanic dinner at the Galt House East on June 12 were introduced
to the Rev. Hector Rodriguez, the new director of Hispanic Congregational
Enhancement in the National Ministries Division.

Rodriguez, now the coordinator for Hispanic Ministries in the Synod of
Southern California and Hawaii, will replace Carlos Santin, who died last
month.

In an after-dinner speech, Rodriguez said he will emphasize teamwork and
partnership in his role as a leader of the one of the fastest-growing
demographic groups in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). He compared his task
to that of an orchestra conductor, who enables a group of individual
musicians to perform with one voice.
Other speakers during the event included the Rev. Francisco Magana
Castellanos, president of the National Presbyterian Church of Mexico; the
Rev. Saul Feria, stated clerk of the Mexican church; Mrs. Carmen Mercado, an
officer of the National Presbyterian Hispanic Caucus; the Rev. Harry Del
Valle of the Association of Hispanic-Americans; and elder Epifanio Marquez,
executive secretary of the Alliance of Reformed Churches in Latin America.

The guests were welcomed by the Rev. Pedro Sayago, pastor of Iglesia
Presbiteriana Beechmont, the only predominantly Hispanic church in the
Louisville area.

Castellanos said Hispanics "on both sides of the border all belong to the
same family ... which is big and growing bigger," and Hispanic Presbyterians
have "resources economic and human to contribute to the church at large." He
called for unity between Hispanic-Americans and "your brothers and sisters
on the other side of the Rio Grande," adding: "People from other places
enrich the (U.S.) culture. You need us just as we need you."
