Dialog with Catholic Church to continue

Catholicity & Ecumenical Relations Committee Reports

by Midge Mack

LOUISVILLE, June 13 - A video tracing recent Catholic-Presbyterian
conversations led to General Assembly approval of resolutions opening the
door for significant continuing dialog between the two churches.
The report came from the Committee of Catholicity and Ecumenical Relations
early in the plenary session of the 213th General Assembly of the
Presbyterian Church, (U.S.A.)
Resolutions acknowledging the Catholic Church as part of the body of Christ,
and calling for continuing study of those practices that first divided us
were approved, as was a resolution of invitation to invite the U.S.
Conference of Catholic Bishops to join in studies leading to possible future
affirmation of one another's baptisms.
Related to these was approval of a resolution inviting the World Alliance of
Reformed Churches to join the Consultation on the Doctrine of Justification
with Catholic, Lutheran and Methodist bodies.
Overture 40 from the Presbytery of Savannah, asking for closer supervision
of National Council of Churches activities and finances, was disapproved.
Other items of business, relating to the slate of churches to be invited to
next year's General Assembly, and commissioners named to attend next
January's inauguration of Churches United in Christ (CUIC), were approved as
was a Commissioner's Resolution that the Assembly take appropriate steps
this year to assist the Christian churches of the Sudan in their struggle
for peace and justice.
The most interesting and informative aspects of this committee's work were
opportunities for committee members to meet and speak with representatives
of nations invited to attend this Assembly: Sudan, Ireland, Croatia, Malawi,
and Malaysia.
