Una Stephenson receives Washington Office award

LOUISVILLE, June 14—The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Washington Office
gave its 2001 Public Policy Award to Una Stephenson, an elder at the
Cottonwood Presbyterian Church in the Presbytery of Utah.  She has been the
moderator of the Social Justice and Peacemaking Committee of that presbytery
and vice moderator of issues for the Presbyterian Women Coordinating
Committee.

	The Rev. Elenora Giddings Ivory, director of the Washington Office, said
Stephenson is “one of those advocates who gets very excited about the
issues and wants information which she takes not only before her local
church and presbytery, but to the state legislature as well.”

	Ivory introduced other staff members to the gathering, including Douglas
Grace, domestic issues associate, Melanie Hardison, coordinator of the
PC(USA) Enough for Everyone Program, Catherine Gordon, international issues
associate.

	The Washington Office celebrated its efforts in the Jubilee 2000 debt
reduction effort through the 30-minute C-span video.  Hardison said debt
cancellation was a reality for some of the most impoverished countries now. 
She said the U.S. had cancelled $445 million so far out of a commitment of
$920 million.
