New resources unveiled at the General Assembly

Congregational Ministries introduces new publications for Christian
educators, worship leaders and planners

by Jerry L. Van Marter

The Congregational Ministries Division of the General Assembly Council
introduced two new publications during the recent 213th General Assembly,
designed to assist worship planners and leaders and those involved in
Christian education programs in Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) congregations.

                    Call to Worship

Call to Worship is a new quarterly publication that includes liturgical
aids for every Sunday of the year. It's a continuation and expansion of
Reformed Liturgy & Music.

"Call to Worship is a resource for musicians, pastors and worship
planners," says editor Theo Gill, former editor of Monday Morning magazine.
"More than that, it is a tool for inviting congregations to the service of
worship and to all the 'action and service' awaiting us in church and
world."

The quarterly publication is a joint effort of Geneva Press, the Office of
Theology and Worship and the Presbyterian Association of Musicians.

The first issue is a book-length collection of articles, book reviews and
worship aids geared to the scripture lessons in the Revised Common
Lectionary.

The entry for each Sunday includes the lectionary readings, call to
worship, prayer of confession, suggested hymns, and options for other choral
and instrumental music selections. Call to Worship also incorporates into
each week's resources selections from the Heidelberg Catechism, a "teaching"
catechism of 52 questions and answers.

For more information, call Theo Gill at 1-888-728-7228, extension 5311, or
visit Call to Worship online at www.genevapress.com.

                    Ideas!

The premier issue of Ideas! has just been published by Congregational
Ministries Publishing. Edited by Kathy L. Copas, it is a completely retooled
publication that replaces and improves upon three previous publications -
Alert, Vanguard and Teacher's Aide.

The Rev. Donald G. Campbell, director of the Congregational Ministries
Division, says, "We see Ideas! as a gathering space, a metaphorical
fireplace, where we can come together each quarter as leaders in our
congregations and swap stories about the best real-life things that have
worked for us.

"We want to be the kind of magazine that is chocked full of great ideas
you'll want to riddle it…tear it apart…and get it in the hands of the movers
and doers in your congregation."

The inaugural issue - with the theme "Gear Up for Fall" - includes a
planning guide for the church year, aids for celebrating Peacemaking Sunday,
ideas for commissioning new church leaders, resources for youth retreats,
different ways to use Covenant People curriculum, help for stewardship
campaigns, tips for practicing family ministry at home, new recipes for
potluck suppers and a special section in which seven congregations tell
about the best things they've ever done.
