New Foundation endowment honors ex-moderator

by Evan Silverstein

LOUISVILLE - The Presbyterian Church (USA) Foundation is creating a
mission-support endowment in honor of the Rev. Syngman Rhee, moderator of
the 212th General Assembly.

The Moderator Syngman Rhee Fund was established with an initial contribution
from the Foundation's board of trustees. Income generated by the endowment
will go to mission programs designated by Rhee in three areas in which he
has a special interest: worldwide mission, campus ministry and
reconciliation in the church. The fund will be managed by the Foundation.

"I am deeply grateful for their kindness," Rhee said of the Foundation's
board members. "I feel honored."

The Foundation hopes to create a new endowment each year in honor of the
outgoing moderator.

"The fund provides an opportunity for all Presbyterians to express their
appreciation for Rhee's dedicated service and commitment to the ministry of
the Presbyterian Church(USA)," Foundation officials said in a prepared
statement.

Rhee said the endowment will be another facet of his "lifelong commitment"
to mission in the United States and around the world.

"I want to continue to emphasize the importance of mission," he told the
Presbyterian News Service. "The second priority is leadership development
(among) youth and young adults, through campus ministries and theological
education. Our church is in need of strong emphasis on ... both lay
leadership and pastoral leadership. That's where I want to place some
emphasis."

He added: "The third thing is the whole aspect of ministry of
reconciliation, in the world and in the church. ... There are so many
conflict situations in need of reconciliation work. A new beginning has been
made because of our church's continual emphasis on reconciliation between
North and South Korea, and the United States and North Korea. I think that's
really important ministry."

The Foundation was created by a Presbyterian General Assembly 202 years ago.
It continues to manage and distribute funds from the first endowment
established (in 1821) by Elias Boudinot, the Foundation's first president.
Thousands of other endowments have been created by faithful Presbyterians
since then.
