Delegates reaffirm convention theme

SAINT LOUIS -- Acting on the first resolution presented by a floor
committee, delegates to the 61st Regular Convention of The Lutheran
Church-Missouri Synod Sunday, July 15, overwhelmingly reaffirmed the church
body s outreach emphasis to "Tell the Good News About Jesus."

That emphasis is also the theme for the July 14-20 gathering of the church
body at the America s Center in downtown Saint Louis. Sunday was the first
day of convention business activity.

Dr. Arthur Scherer, president of the Missouri Synod s Southeastern District
and chairman of the missions floor committee, called it appropriate that
"the first resolution reflects the theme" of the convention. "This sets the
tone of hope in reaching out to Tell the Good News About Jesus that is the
focus of our church body," he said.

The approved resolution directs the LCMS Board for Congregational Services
Evangelism Ministry to "lead a bold effort" in encouraging the church body
s 35 districts to help parishes and members to regularly pray and study the
Bible; share the Gospel with others in their communities; and make every
LCMS congregation both an "encouraging place" for members to "Tell the Good
News About Jesus" and a "welcoming place" for those receiving this message.

The church body meets in convention every three years.
