Delegates vote to place family-life directors on roster

ST. LOUIS Delegates to the 61st Regular Convention of The Lutheran Church
Missouri Synod voted Tuesday, July 17, to place directors of family-life
ministry on the roster of church-body workers as "ministers of religion
commissioned."

Those eligible would have to be graduates of a director of family-life
ministry program recognized by the Synod s Board for Higher Education and
Concordia University System. Family-life directors work in congregational
and other settings to provide specialized ministry to families.

After adopting that resolution, delegates voted to reconsider another
resolution that had earlier failed to win adoption. The failed resolution
called for placing directors of parish music on the roster, also as
"ministers of religion commissioned."

Delegates "now have an issue of fairness," said one, speaking in favor of
reconsidering the failed resolution. Although delegates voted in favor of
reconsideration, they were unable to take another vote on the resolution
due to time constraints. That vote likely will be taken tomorrow, July 18.

The Synod s convention runs through July 20.
