Convention recognizes long-time missionaries

ST. LOUIS Eight long-time missionary couples were recognized today at the
61st Regular Convention of The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, meeting at
the America s Center in downtown St. Louis. Together the missionaries,
introduced by the Rev. Dr. Glenn O Shoney, executive director of LCMS World
Mission, have spent a total of 486 years "proclaiming the Gospel of
Christ," O Shoney said.

"We celebrate and thank God for all the men and women who have accepted God
s call to share the Gospel in word and deed as career missionaries and
volunteer missionaries," he said. "Today we especially want to recognize
the distinguished missionary service of eight servants who have labored in
the Lord s harvest fields for 30, 40 and even 50 years."

The missionaries considered it "a privilege to have had the opportunity to
cross the barriers of language and culture to share the Good News about
Jesus Christ," O Shoney continued. "And we count it a privilege to have had
the opportunity to pray for and support them as mission senders."

Those honored, and the countries in which they served, were:
Woodrow and Margie Arp, Papua New Guinea and Nigeria;
the Rev. Paul and Ruby Bruns, Nigeria;
Edward and Phyllis Dicke, Papua New Guinea;
the Rev. Luther and Gladys Engelbrecht, India;
Merle and Dorothy Golnick, Taiwan;
the Rev. Robert and Margarete Huebner, Venezuela, Mexico and Central and
South America;
the Rev. Paul and Carol Kreyling, China and Japan; and
the Rev. Luther and Juanita Meinzen, India.

In closing, O Shoney led the convention in a prayer, thanking God for the
missionaries service and asking Him to "give us the same zeal and vision
these faithful saints had and still have for Your mission to the entire world."
