ELCA Assembly Hears Results of First Ballot for Secretary

ELCA ASSEMBLY HEARS RESULTS OF FIRST BALLOT FOR SECRETARY

     INDIANAPOLIS (ELCA) -- The Rev. Lowell G. Almen was the leader
after the first ballot for secretary Aug. 11 at the churchwide assembly
of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).  Almen currently
serves in the position and has been secretary since the ELCA was formed
in 1987.
     The churchwide assembly, the chief legislative authority of the
ELCA, is meeting here Aug. 8-14 at the Indiana Convention Center.  There
are more than 2,000 people participating, including 1,040 ELCA voting
members.  The theme for the biennial assembly is "Making Christ Known:
Sharing Faith in a New Century."
     Almen received 536 votes on the first ballot, the nominating
ballot for secretary.  Second was Glenndy L. Sculley, assistant to the
bishop of the ELCA Saint Paul Area Synod, with 115 votes.  Sculley
serves on the staff of the Rev. Mark S. Hanson, who was elected
presiding bishop of the ELCA Aug. 11.  The Rev. Mark A. Grorud, First
Lutheran Church, Fremont, Neb., was third with 34 votes.
     Among others receiving votes on the first ballot were the Rev. M.
Wyvetta Bullock, executive director, ELCA Division for Congregational
Ministries, 23 votes; the Rev. Andrea DeGroot-Nesdahl, bishop of the
ELCA South Dakota Synod, 20 votes; and the Rev. Donald J. McCoid, bishop
of the ELCA Southwestern Pennsylvania Synod, 20 votes.
     There 956 legal votes    cast; 718 votes were need for election on
the first ballot.  There were 123 nominees on the first ballot.
     A second ballot for secretary is scheduled Aug. 12 at the
churchwide assembly.
