Lutherans install new national bishop
Recent U.S. events prevent Anglican Primate from attending

The Rev. Raymond L. Schultz was installed as National Bishop of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) on Sunday, September 16, at
Lutheran Church of the Cross, Winnipeg. He is the third person to hold the
office, succeeding Rev. Telmor Sartison who retired at the end of
September, and their predecessor Rev. Donald Sjoberg who retired in 1993.

The tragic events in the United States of the previous week somewhat
overshadowed the event as Rev. H. George Anderson, presiding bishop of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, who was to have been the preacher,
and Archbishop Michael Peers, Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, who
was to have represented his church, were unable to attend because of the
difficulty of arranging airline transportation. Bishop Sartison preached in
Bishop Anderson's stead and Donald Phillips, bishop of the Anglican
Church's diocese of Rupert's Land, represented his church. Archbishop James
Weisgerber, of the Roman Catholic diocese of Winnipeg, brought greetings
from Roman Catholics in Canada.

As he reflected in his sermon on the events of the past week and the task
ahead of Bishop Schultz and the members of the ELCIC, Bishop Sartison
urged, "On to the future. We don't have the answers. Only God does. We must
pray for the grace to ask the right questions."

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada has 630 congregations with
194,000 baptized members. It recently entered into full communion with the
Anglican Church of Canada.
