NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) - A United Methodist entity is using money
originally earmarked for its annual board meeting to establish a scholarship
fund for the dependents of victims of the recent terrorist attacks.

The United Methodist Higher Education Foundation cancelled its Sept. 20-22
meeting and established the September 11th Memorial Scholarship Fund. The
scholarships will be restricted to United Methodists students attending one
of the 123 United Methodist-related academic institutions in the United
States.

The scholarship fund was created to provide assistance in an area that may
not be addressed by current relief efforts, said George M. Miller, the
foundation's president and chief executive officer.

"The memorial fund is a positive way for us to show our support and to help
those who have been directly affected by these devastating events," he said,
referring to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. "The repercussions of this past
week will be felt for many years to come."

The foundation's board has meet annually for 36 years and has never
cancelled a board meeting before. In light of the incidents, Miller said
board business would be handled by teleconference calls Sept. 20-22.
