      Chen is one of the most common family names in Taiwan. To say that
one is a Chen is a rather safe way of keeping one's identity a secret.
Mrs. Chen prefers it that way.  She won't even say to which congregation
she belongs. Recently she gave twenty million Taiwan Yuan (approximately
US$570,000) to a small church that has outgrown its building.
      She's 73 years old and her husband is a doctor. She heard that
Fu-bin Presbyterian Church in the Kaohsiung suburb of Tso-ying had
outgrown its facilities. The Rev. Mr Li Chai-ren, pastor of Fu-bin,
represented his congregation in extending profound thanks.
      Though Mrs. Chen is a Christian her husband is not. If of any
religion at all, he follows the folk faith of most Taiwanese. He did
not, however, oppose her faith, her church participation, or even her
presentation of so generous a gift.  Some years ago she had an abdominal
tumor that resulted in nerve damage and paralyzed her.  She elected to
undergo surgery, and was not expected to recover completely.  But she is
thankful for the love and care of God. In her renewed strength she has
elected to use her wealth to support small and weak churches.
   Fu-bin is only one of those which has received her help.  She
contributed to the reconstruction of a church that was destroyed in an
earthquake in Central Taiwan in 1999 and to another that she has not
named.
