Women's ordination anniversary marked across Canada

Parishes and dioceses across the country are marking the 25th anniversary
of the first ordinations of women in Canada with a variety of celebrations.
The first ordinations of women in Canada took place on Nov. 30, 1976.

Toronto's Trinity College and Wycliffe College will hold a joint
celebration on Nov. 1 with Evensong at Trinity and dinner at Wycliffe,
followed by storytelling by special guests, including the national church's
director of faith, worship and ministry, Rev. Alyson Barnett-Cowan. For
information call 416-658-4170.

Also in Toronto, St. James Cathedral will hold a choral Evensong at 4:30
p.m., Sunday Nov. 18 with Bishop Ann Tottenham preaching. Bishop Tottenham
is a suffragan bishop in the diocese of Toronto. Call (416) 364-7865 for
more information.

The diocese of Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador will observe the
anniversary on Sunday, Nov. 4 with a Eucharist in the Cathedral of St. John
the Baptist, St. John's. The presider will be Rev. Trudy Gosse, the first
woman to graduate from Queen's College and the first woman to be ordained
in the diocese. Her ordination took place in 1985. Dean William Bellamy
will preach. Call (709) 726-5677 for more information.

The diocese of Quebec will hold a service Nov. 29 at the Cathedral of the
Holy Trinity in Quebec City; the celebrant will be Rev. Mia Anderson. Call
(418) 692 2193 for details.

The diocese of Algoma will hold its celebration at the Church of the
Epiphany Dec. 1 in Sudbury, Ont., with Archdeacon Susan de Gruchy
preaching. Call (705) 675 2279 for more details.

The diocese of Huron has planned a Eucharistic celebration for Tuesday,
Nov. 20. The service will gather all the women clergy in the diocese; the
celebrant will be Rev. Eleanor Caruana, a recent ordinand, while the
homilist will be Rev. Georgina Foster-Haig, who was the third woman
ordained in Huron. The diocese is also encouraging parishes to set aside
one day to celebrate the anniversary liturgically and is hoping that the
offerings from those celebrations will go to support women theological
students.

Meanwhile, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, with whom the
Anglican Church is now in full communion (meaning church members may
receive sacraments in either church), already marked its 25th anniversary
of the ordination of women on Oct. 21.

The national church's faith, worship and ministry department is also
collecting the liturgical resources used in the various celebrations in
order to share them with other groups wishing to mark the anniversary.
