Nominations sought for Restorative Justice Award

Deadline is March 15

by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE - Nominations are currently being sought for the Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.)'s 2002 Restorative Justice Award.

Deadline for submitting nominations for the award - which is administered
by the Criminal Justice Program of the National Ministries Division - is
March 15, 2002.

Restorative Justice is defined as "addressing the hurts and needs of the
victim, the offender and the community in such a way that all - victim,
offender and community - might be healed."

The Restorative Justice Award was established in 1991 to recognize
Presbyterian individuals or groups related to the denomination who are
making outstanding contributions to direct-service ministries or who are
effectively advocating reform of the country's criminal justice system
toward restorative justice.

Nominations may be submitted by a session, congregation, presbytery or
synod, related agency or appropriate group within the PC(USA). Nominations
made by individuals will not be accepted.

Nominations must include the name of the nominee, the name of the program
or project with which the nominee is affiliated, a description of why the
nominee is deserving of the award and the nominating body's name, address,
and relationship to the PC(USA). A reasonable amount of background
information may also be submitted with the nomination.

According to the award prospectus, the award-winner will be "a person or
group who works as an agent of justice, service, and peace within the
community, embodying the church's call to do justice. The work to be
recognized will ordinarily involve a confrontation with injustice and a
commitment to transformation of human relations and/or criminal justice
structures, so that all God's people can more fully experience justice and
peace, consistent with the definition of restorative justice."

Nominations should be sent to: Presbyterian Criminal Justice Program, 100
Witherspoon Street, Louisville, KY 40202-1396; (502) 569-5803 or toll-free
(888) 728-7228, ext. 5803.
