PC(USA) jobs, job seekers about even, study finds

Location, salary are main obstacles to finding a good match

by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE - The number of church professionals seeking new calls and the number of jobs available are just about even, according to a Jan. 8 "snapshot" taken by the Presbyterian Church (USA) office of Churchwide Personnel Services (CPS).
One department of CPS, the Church Leadership Connection, compiles "at the moment" data periodically to gauge the employment situation in the PC(USA).
The Rev. Marcia Myers, associate director for CPS in the National Ministries Division, said the Jan. 8 study revealed a "crossover" - meaning that the number of professionals seeking jobs is higher than the number of job openings - for the second time in a row. The last previous look at the data, last fall, showed 1,281 people seeking jobs and 1,241 available positions.
This time there were 1,289 professionals (1,258 clergy and 31 lay professionals) looking for jobs and 1,252 available positions.
The numbers were pretty hopeful for first-call ministers: 143 professionals were looking for an initial call, and there were 452 jobs available for first-call ministers.
The system includes 129 racial-ethnic clergy and lay professionals and 84 racial-ethnic or multi-ethnic churches with openings.
The main difficulties in matching applicants with available jobs were: location, type of position available (pastor, administrator, middle governing body staff, chaplain, campus minister), and compensation.
The categories with the most openings were: solo pastor (578), head of staff of a multi-staff church (184), and associate pastor (177). No openings were available for chaplains, church administrators or synod staff.
The states with the most opportunities were Pennsylvania (115), Texas (76), Virginia (59), and Illinois (53).
