High-tech bulbs: a bright idea for fund-raising

Youth groups' lamp sales will protect environment, fatten treasuries

by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE - "If only I could save the environment AND raise money for my youth group. "
Presbyterian young people can do exactly that - thanks to the Youth Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) Bulb Project, a program designed to educate people about the positive environmental impact of new bulb technology and to help church youth groups raise money for their ministries.
Each bulb sold at $9 generates $2 for the youth group.
A post card explaining the project is being mailed on Jan. 18 to all Presbyterian Church (USA) congregations with more than 150 members in the approximately 70 presbyteries that have Restoring Creation Enablers. The card tells how to order the CFL fund-raiser packet (cost $4).
The package also contains information about how CFL bulbs work and why they are environmentally friendlier than incandescent bulbs; a video and study guide about the environmental justice concerns of the PC(USA); order forms for the light bulbs; and resources for promoting the project in the congregation.
The CFL project is sponsored by the Eco-Justice Working Group of the National Council of Churches; PC(USA) participation is spearheaded by the Environmental Justice Office of the National Ministries Division and the Presbyterian Youth Connection.
The contact person for the denomination is Rebecca Barnes-Davies, program assistant for the Presbyterian Environmental Justice Office. She can be reached by phone at 888-728-7228, ext. 5811, or by email at bbarnes@ctr.pcusa.org.
Additional information about the project is available on the Web at www.pcusa.org/environment. You can also request an educational package by mail at Youth CFL Project, 1451 Dundee Avenue, Elgin, IL 60120-9958.
