Notes about people

The Rev. Arthur C. Cochrane, a theologian and scholar who documented the underground church in Germany that resisted Nazism under Adolf Hitler, died Jan. 1 in Minneapolis. He was 92.
A native of Canada, Cochrane spent the years 1935-1937 in Nazi Germany with the Confessing Church in Germany while working on his Ph.D. His 1962 book, The Church's Confession Under Hitler, is still considered to be the definitive authority on the subject. He was also considered on the world's leading authorities on Karl Barth.
Cochrane taught at numerous universities and seminaries, including Pittsburgh Theological Seminary from 1971-1975 and the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary from 1976-1989.
He was preceded in death in 1998 by his wife of 61 years, Ilsa, whom he met in Germany; two sons, Eduard and Gordon; and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Feb. 2 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Dubuque, IA.

Renowned Presbyterian poet Ann Weems is slowly recovering from a harrowing ordeal in a St. Louis area hospital.
Shortly after successful hip replacement surgery on Dec. 27, Weems suffered a severe seizure that left her paralyzed on her right side. An examination revealed a massive brain tumor, which was found to be benign and was removed a couple days later. However, the trauma of the seizure and brain surgery caused Weems' hip replacement to come apart and so it had to be redone a couple days after the brain surgery.
A massive seizure and three major surgeries in five days. Weems is finally out of Intensive Care. She will remain hospitalized for another two weeks and then will be moved to a rehabilitation facility.
Cards with well wishes are most welcome. Send your greeting to Ann Weems, St. Luke's Hospital, 232 S. Woods Mill Rd., Chesterfield, MO 63017.
