EASTERN COLLEGE BECOMES EASTERN
UNIVERSITY
 Eastern College, an American Baptist-related
school in St. Davids, Pa., has become Eastern University.
Eastern responded to a strong recommendation
for that change from the Middle States Association of
Colleges and Schools, which had considered the school's
extensive graduate programs and new School of
International Leadership and Development. Eastern has
established 13 graduate programs over the past 21 years,
with the total number of master's degree students growing
to more than 1,300.
President David Black said, "We believe that the
knowledge and character formation that 21st century
society needs most comes from the integration of faith,
reason and justice in all courses and programs. We also
believe that Eastern has been called by the Holy Spirit to
establish a relevant university on that philosophical
foundation."
Eastern, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary
this year, is one of 16 colleges and universities related to
American Baptist Churches USA through Educational
Ministries.
