Second California pastor joins moderator race

Jerry Tankersley of Laguna Beach endorsed by Los Ranchos Presbytery

LOUISVILLE — By a near-unanimous voice vote on Jan. 18, Los Ranchos Presbytery endorsed the Rev. Arthur J. “Jerry” Tankersley for moderator of the 214th General Assembly next June in Columbus, Ohio.

	Tankersley has been pastor of the 721-member Laguna Beach Presbyterian Church since 1972. He previously served as associate pastor of La Canada (CA) Presbyterian Church from 1966-1972, and as assistant pastor of Wilshire Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles from 1963-1964.

	A graduate of Fuller Theological Seminary, Tankersley has advanced degrees from Princeton Theological Seminary and the School of Theology in Claremont. He also earned a Ph.D. in government from the Claremont Graduate School.

	Tankersley has been very active in Los Ranchos Presbytery, including service on several committees and for 18 months in 1990-1991 as moderator during a transition between presbytery executives. He has been a commissioner to General Assembly from the presbytery twice previously, in 1977 and 1991.

	A leader in a presbytery that takes worldwide mission seriously, Tankersley has led two Los Ranchos mission teams overseas — to Miraj, India in 1993 and to Limuru Presbytery in East Africa in 1994.

	He joins the Rev. Laird Stuart, pastor of Calvary Presbyterian Church in San Francisco, as the only two announced candidates for moderator of this year’s Assembly. The election is slated for Saturday, June 15.
