In 1996 the Ta-an Presbyterian Church in Taipei City
established a mission to Malawi special service project. Since
then the congregation has sent three special service groups
to visit and serve there. Rev. Lo Lian-seng, the pastor of
Ta An Church, points out that the mission is focused on three
areas: Health, Education and Continuity.
The health aspect has taken the form of a team of doctors
and nurses visiting to give support and bring medicines. The
educational part of the program recognizes that, though 70%
of Malawi's people are Christians, their religious education,
and professional training are much in need of support. The
need for continuity in the relationship takes the form of establishing
a fixed relationship for the church's participation in mission in
Malawi. That needs long term involvement and nourishment
under a finely drawn plan.
The current state of affairs between Ta An and the partners
in Africa is very good. Taiwan's ambassador there, Chen
Shyi-aw has been supportive. The church hopes that for
the 130th anniversary of Presbyterian Mission in Northern
Taiwan, to be celebrated this year, some friends from
Malawi can participate and share in international
service.
