Notes about people

by Jerry L. Van Marter

The Rev. W. Clark Chamberlain, stated clerk of the Synod of the Sun for 18 years, retired Dec. 31. He will be honorably retired by New Covenant Presbytery on June 3, the 30th anniversary of his ordination.

In his distinguished career, Chamberlain, also an attorney, served as the first chairperson of the Association of Stated Clerks. He served a six-year term on the General Assembly Permanent Judicial Commission and was its clerk for five of those years.

An unfortunately defining moment in Chamberlain's career came in 1992 when he was elected General Assembly stated clerk, only to be accused the same day of sexual misconduct by a staff member in the Office of the General Assembly. He declined the election the following day, after which the General Assembly reelected the incumbent clerk, the Rev. James E. Andrews.

The sexual misconduct allegation was subsequently dismissed as having no merit. Chamberlain told the Presbyterian News Service the experience left him "somewhat embittered and depressed."

Partially to vindicate his reputation, Chamberlain ran again for General Assembly stated clerk in 1996, finishing second in the voting to the Rev. Clifton Kirkpatrick.
