Panel funds 21 self-help projects

SDOP invests $955,000 in social-service programs around the globe

LOUISVILLE - The National Presbyterian Committee on the Self-Development of People (SDOP) has invested $955,290 in self-help projects around the world.

The committee approved 21 projects during a Jan. 25-26 meeting in Phoenix, AZ. The money will come from the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering.

SDOP enables members and non-members of the Presbyterian Church (USA) to establish partnerships with poor, oppressed and disadvantaged people. Its investments are intended to help people reach their potential and gain independence. 

The following projects were approved:

* SOHO Artist Storefront Project, Chisholm, MN: $120,036 for a studio.

* East Hillside/Endion MFIP Organization, Duluth, MN: $150,000 for job development and leadership training.	

* American Oromo Community of Minnesota, St. Paul, MN: $150,000 for English language instruction and job training.

* Urban Sound Studio, Chicago, IL: $75,399 for a music studio.

* Lindy's Dream Builders, Duluth, MN: $150,000 for a business that will provide housing and employment opportunities for low-income families.

* Sisters Overcoming Abusive Relationships, Warwick, RI: $75,000 to support a program for survivors of domestic violence.	

* Youth Skill Development, Bethany Orphans Association, Soroti, Uganda: $20,968 to equip a furniture-making cooperative.

* Farming Equipment and Seeds, Adelop Association of Development, Kiowa, Congo: $12,478 for farming equipment and supplies.

* Nema Kafo Bee Keeping Business, Georgetown, Gambia: $30,000 to mechanize a rice-growing operation.

* Cooling Plant, Buwama Tuli Bumy Women's Group, Kampala, Uganda: $10,250 for milk coolers to prevent spoilage.

* Improving Together, Bio-Organic Farm for Growth, Iasi, Romania: $28,800 for improvements to cooperative farm.

* Upper Bayelle Quarter Road Drainage, Bamenda, Cameroon: $12,046 for road construction and maintenance. 

* Bamfem Bongsuiru Women's Farm Project, Kumbo, Republic of Cameroon: $18,600 for potato and soybean production and marketing.

* Brick Make Program, Kurnool Dist., AP, India: 2,000 for a brick-manufacturing cooperative.

* Buwenge Women Poultry Project, Jinja, Uganda: $16,883 for diversification of a poultry farm.	

* Pastors' Widows' Concern Group, Mityana, Uganda: $8,800 for sewing machines for production of clothing.

* Women's Union, Bamenda, Cameroon: $26,650 to support a women's farming cooperative.	

* Kihambayiro Rural Women Development Project, Kilhambayiro, Uganda: $2,280 to establish a bakery.

* Bujubi Teacher Training Center, Mityana, Uganda: $30,000 to build and equip a training facility for teachers.	

* Ndoh Funkuin Mixed Farming Group, Nkwen-Bamenda, North West, Cameroon: $5,800 for a grain mill.

* Anbulagam Federation of Women's Groups, Thanganu-Tamilnadu, India: $9,300 for family-income enhancement program. 

The national committee also certified 28 presbytery-level SDOP committees and five synod-level committees to allocate funds to local projects. The synods are Alaska-Northwest, Covenant, Rocky Mountains, the Sun and Trinity. The presbyteries are Cayuga-Syracuse, Central Florida, Charlotte, Chicago, Detroit, Eastern Oklahoma, Geneva, Lake Erie, Long Island, Miami, Monmouth, National Capital, New Brunswick, New Castle, North Central Iowa, Northeast Georgia, Pacific, Peace River, Philadelphia, Prospect Hill, Redwood, Santa Fe, San Francisco, San Gabriel, San Jose, Scioto Valley, Sheppards & Lapsley, Sierra Blanca, Western North Carolina and West Virginia.
