The search is on for a full-time executive director of Churches Uniting in
Christ (CUIC), the new ecumenical entity ushered in during a January
celebration in Memphis, Tenn.

United Methodist Bishop Melvin Talbert, the denomination's ecumenical
officer, told United Methodist News Service that the new director will not
work out of the Lowell, Mass., office of the Consultation on Church Union,
the organization's predecessor body.

"The important thing is to get the right person," he said during a Feb. 18
telephone interview. "Then we will work with that person to make the best
possible location for the office."

The new director will provide leadership for the CUIC coordinating council
and task forces working at reconciling the ordained ministries of member
communions; monitoring racial justice issues and encouraging efforts at
racial justice at the local level; and assisting with CUIC activities and
initiatives in local communities.

Talbert is convener for a transitional steering committee, which is phasing
out the former office and seeing that all materials are properly archived.

Besides the United Methodist Church, the nine CUIC member communions include
the African Methodist Episcopal Church, African Methodist Episcopal Zion
Church, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Christian Methodist
Episcopal Church, Episcopal Church, International Council of Community
Churches, Presbyterian Church (USA) and United Church of Christ.
