PDA dispenses $65,000

Grants will help 2 war-torn African countries, storm-tossed Kansas

LOUISVILLE — Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) has dispatched $35,000 from the One Great Hour of Sharing offering to two African countries to aid families forced from their homes by civil war. 

Closer to home, PDA has provided $30,000 to a Kansas presbytery helping residents cope with the aftermath of a recent winter storm.
The details: 

* Liberia will receive $20,000 to be used to help meet the needs of women and children sexually abused by combatants in the country's ongoing civil violence. The aid, to be managed by Concerned Christian Communities (CCC), a member agency of the Liberia Christian Council (LCC), will include health care for rape victims and grants to help women establish businesses and become self-supporting.

* $15,000 will go to Angola to support a one-year emergency and rehabilitation project of the Evangelical Reformed Church of Angola (IERA) that includes health services, agricultural programs, food aid, water and sanitation systems, AIDS-awareness education and distribution of relief.

* The Presbytery of Southern Kansas will receive $30,000 from the One Great Hour of Sharing offering and gifts designated for disaster relief to help residents harmed by a late-January ice storm that killed 20 people and caused extensive property damage.

The money will be used to support the ministries of First Presbyterian Church of Winfield, KS, and First Presbyterian Church of Arkansas City, KS, and for cleanup and repairs at Westminster Woods, the presbytery's camp and conference center in Fall River, KS.

PDA, one of three programs supported by the One Great Hour of Sharing offering, is part of the Worldwide Ministries Division (WMD) of the Presbyterian Church (USA).
