ACNS 2902 - SUDAN - 5 March 2002

Building peace through service

[Together for Sudan] The Together for Peace office - through which both
Together for Sudan and The Bishop Mubarak Scholarship for Nuba Women work -
is filled with energy, ideas and people, many of whom are volunteers.

In January 2002, the Women's Income Generation Project saw the graduation of
30 women who have recently completed training in health and nutrition,
saving and planning, legal rights and self protection. They will now work in
committees to decide on projects so that small loans, repayable in six
months, may be allocated in March. It is the hope that this pilot project
will be duplicated elsewhere.

Many more projects have been instigated by the Together for Peace office
including the Breakfast Project, which provides food for displaced children,
the Medicine Box Project, which supplies basic medicines to licensed
practitioners who offer free assistance to those in need and The Eye Glasses
Project, which hopes to treat simple eye diseases and provide glasses.

The Director of Together for Sudan, Lillian Craig Harris, announced, "We are
committed to helping those whose lives have been shattered by war, poverty
and displacement to hold on to hope and begin to build for a better future.

"Post 11 September, we are more committed than ever to demonstrating that
Christians and Muslims can live in peace with one another and work together
to serve others."
