Document on immigrants, refugees available in Korean, Spanish

LOUISVILLE - The Advisory Committee on Social Witness Policy (ACSWP) and the Office of Immigrant Group Ministries are making available Korean- and Spanish-language versions of the Presbyterian Church (USA)'s recent resolution on relations with immigrants.

The document, Transforming Churches and Society through Encounters with New Neighbors, was approved by the 211th General Assembly (1999) of the Presbyterian Church (USA).

"Copies are going out to Korean- and Spanish-speaking congregations to offer greater access to this important resolution," said Peter A. Sulyok, coordinator for ACSWP. He said the translations will be sent to pastors in the coming week.

"The Assembly saw this resolution as the basis for a call to a new level of engagement with immigrants, refugees, and asylum-seekers," Sulyok added. "The translations will open the door a little wider."

Transforming Churches and Society Through Encounters With New Neighbors affirms the PC(USA)'s longstanding policies on the treatment of immigrants and refugees and its identity as "a church of the stranger." It says social witness, evangelism and mission are all essential parts of the church's response to "new neighbors" in our midst.

"The whole church is challenged to encounter new neighbors as gifts to the church," Sulyok told the Presbyterian News Service. As an example of such a gift, he cited a case mentioned in the resolution - that of Mauricio Chacon, an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador who became a minister and revitalized an inner-city church in decline, Iglesia Presbiteriana de la Mision in San Francisco, CA.
