Presbyterian pastor will discuss church's legal battle with New York City

by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE - The Rev. Thomas K. Tewell, pastor of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City, will be featured on Easter Sunday on a special segment of Religion and Ethics Newsweekly, a news magazine show broadcast by PBS.

The program, on the issue of homelessness, includes film shot in Fifth Avenue Church's shelter for the homeless and interviews with some of the men who sleep there each night.

Fifth Avenue Church filed suit in federal court last fall after the City of New York ruled that the church could not continue allowing homeless people to sleep on its steps. A judge sided with the church, but the city appealed, and the case is pending before the Circuit Court of Appeal.

Tewell will be interviewed on the program about the church's ministry to the homeless and its court battle with city officials.

For air times in your area, check your local TV listings for Religion and Ethics Newsweekly.
