Synod periodicals receive
5 awards in ACP contest

"Reporter" and "The Lutheran Witness," The Lutheran Church--Missouri
Synod's two official periodicals, won a total of five awards in this year's
Associated Church Press (ACP) competition for work done in 2001. "Reporter"
and "The Lutheran Witness" are a monthly newspaper and a monthly magazine,
respectively.

The awards presentation was April 9 during the ACP's annual convention,
this year in Birmingham, Ala. ACP is an association of some 200 church
related publications and news services.

"Reporter" received a first-place "Award of Excellence" in the news- story
category for Staff Writer Paula Schlueter Ross' September Page 1 story on
the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on America. The judge's comments noted that
the story, titled "LCMS members witness best, worst of humanity," was
"excellent [and] well done, especially considering the time constraints."
That issue went to the printer on Sept. 12.

In the "Department" category for newspapers, "Reporter" picked up an
"Honorable Mention" (third place) for the back-page "Ideas" section,
written by Managing Editor Bruce Kueck.

"The Lutheran Witness" received two second-place "Awards of Merit."

One was for "Razing Hell," by the late Dr. Robert C. Baden, in the April
issue. It was entered in the category "Theological Reflection: 1,500 Words
or More." The judge commented that it covered an "unusual topic," and was
"well written and discussed."

The other "Award of Merit," in the "Biographical Profile" category, was
free-lance writer Roland Lovstad's May story on Synod President A.L. Barry,
following Barry's death. Titled "Al, It's Time to Come Home," it was cited
by the judge for "nice use of quotes, good use of examples of his beliefs."

In the "Critical Review Section" category, "The Lutheran Witness" received
an "Honorable Mention" for B. Brent McGuire's article, "Will You Be `Left
Behind'?" The "Witness" shared that honor with another magazine,
"Christianity and the Arts."
