NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) - The United Methodist Higher Education Foundation
is giving its annual awards to four people for their contributions to
church-related schools.

This year's recipients are:
7	Cal Turner Jr., of Brentwood, Tenn. Turner is the winner of the
annual Stanley S. Kresge Award, given for dedicated membership in the United
Methodist Church and support of United Methodist-related education.
7	Ellen S. Goldey of Spartanburg, S.C. The associate professor of
biology at Wofford College has been named Outstanding Educator of the Year,
an award given to teachers in United Methodist-related schools and
seminaries who have made an extraordinary impact on their students, peers,
the institution, church and community.
7	The Rev. Cheryl Cavalari of Trucksville, Pa. Named Campus Minister
of the Year, she is director of campus ministries of Northeast Pennsylvania.
7	The Rev. William Draper Finlaw of Lincoln, Neb. The minister at
Nebraska Wesleyan University is the winner of the Chaplain of the Year
award.

William T. Luckey Jr., president of Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Ky.,
nominated Turner for the Kresge award. "During his years of service, Mr.
Turner's leadership and unselfish giving transformed the once-struggling
junior college into the master's degree-granting institution Lindsey Wilson
is today. It is here where Mr. Turner has used the intellectual and capital
resources with which he has been blessed to advance the Methodist mission
behind the miracles taking place on our campus every day," Luckey said.

A member of Brentwood United Methodist Church, Turner is also the chief
executive officer, chairman and president of Dollar General Corp., a chain
of 5,486 neighborhood stores operating in 24 states. As the Kresge award
winner, he will receive a medallion and a certificate, and Lindsey Wilson
will receive a $10,000 scholarship endowment.

The foundation cited Turner for more than two decades of leadership of
Lindsey Wilson, during which he helped the college increase its endowment
and number of students, and his donations helped the school's physical
plant.

In nominating Goldey as Outstanding Educator of the Year, Wofford President
Benjamin Dunlap said she "clearly stands head and shoulders above most
undergraduate professors of my past and present acquaintance. ... In a
faculty traditionally dominated by white males, Dr. Goldey stands out as
superior to most and inferior to none." Goldey will receive an artistic
replica of the Cokesbury Bell and a cash award of $5,000.

Excellence in campus ministry earned Cavalari the mantle of Campus Minister
of the Year. "Although the 13 campuses within the region are very diverse -
public, private, church-related, two-year, four-year - Cheryl has been
creative enough to develop programs that are in sync with the needs of each
campus (and) has built the campus ministries of Northeast Pennsylvania into
an effective, proactive ministry that is poised to meet the future spiritual
demand of colleges and students in the region," said Dwayne A. Hilton, chair
of campus ministries of the Northeast Pennsylvania Board. Cavalari will
receive an inscribed sculpture and $5,000 for further development of
programs.

Finlaw is being recognized for extraordinary work as a chaplain at a United
Methodist-related institution. "Dr. William Draper Finlaw represents the
United Methodist Church with vigor and distinction; he is a man of
conscience and strong commitment to the church and to a life of teaching and
faith," said Jeanie Watson, president of Nebraska Wesleyan. Finlaw will
receive an inscribed sculpture and $5,000 to further develop programs.

The United Methodist Higher Education Foundation's goal is to make it
economically possible for any qualified United Methodist student to be
educated at one of the denominations 124 colleges and universities. For more
