Bible society to salute clergy

Prayer breakfast will honor ministers for response to Sept. 11 attacks

by Evan Silverstein

LOUISVILLE - The American Bible Society (ABS) will pay tribute next month to clergy from New York City and elsewhere for "superlative" work in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of last Sept. 11.

The ABS, whose mission is to make Bibles available to everyone in the world without regard to language or ability to pay, will be host of an 8 a.m. prayer breakfast on May 2 at its New York City offices.

"It's a way of thanking clergy, particularly in the New York City area, for their work after Sept. 11 consoling bereaved families (and) helping the spiritual support of the city," said Peter Feuerherd, the society's media-relations manager.

The theme of the event, which will be open to the public, is Constant Hope: A Time of Refreshing Through Prayer and Fellowship. The (New York) Christ Tabernacle Singers will perform the opening hymn; that church's pastor, the Rev. Michael Durso, will make the keynote address; and a number of various New York City-area clergy will lead participants in prayer. The program is expected to last two and a half hours.

For more information, call event coordinator Jeanette Russo at (212) 408-1234.
