Mother Love for Taipei City
Taiwan Church News 2619, May 12, 2002
Reported by Lin Yi-ying, Translated by David Alexander

Ever since Chen Shui-bian came into office as Taiwan's
president, the government and people of Taipei City have been
holding a Natural Environment Protection Education Festival in
the Spring. This is the third year running. Several
non-governmental organizations join in planning and running the
event. These groups and the government coordinate the event's
dates to coincide with Mother's Day, the second Sunday of May, in
order to promote love for Mother Earth.
This year the organizing theme is "Life Thrives in A Sunny
Taipei." Events scheduled from May 10 to 19 will include the
announcement, by Mayor Ma Ying-jyou, of the Taipei Environmental
City Statement on the 10th.

Taiwan Presbyterian Church General Assembly Responds to Nuclear
Waste Protest
Taiwan Church News 2619, May 12, 2002

The Rev. Chang Hai-yu, who is the pastor of a church on Orchid
Island, in the Tao Aboriginal district of the PCT, has directly
asked the church's General Assembly to take a stand on the matter
of a Nuclear Waste Storage Facility on the island. The General
Assembly's Secretary for Church and Society, The Rev. Cheng
Ing-er, said last week that the matter had been referred to the
committee he serves for action. This was not the first time that
the matter has come up. He promised that the committee would
cooperate with local congregations and the Tao District in its
response.
Cheng said that the problem has been a long time in
development, so will not be solved in a flash. The General
Assembly is supportive of the local churches' demands, but finds
the District's manner of operating to be fractious. A better
focus would help matters at all levels.
On May 1st the churches on Orchid Island cooperated with other
groups to hold a mass protest at the gates of the Nuclear Waste
Storage Facility. The Church and Society Committee sent the
Moderator of Tainan Presbytery, the Rev. Lim Chong-cheng, to
observe. Cheng said that as the Tao District makes its position
clearer, the General Assembly will give stronger support.
