CCA Sunday in Taipei
May 12th was Asia Concern Sunday in churches across the
Christian Conference of Asia. This year's focus was Asia's newest
independent nation, East Timor, and its CCA member Protestant
Church. The event was marked in Taipei with a special service of
worship held at Chi-nan Presbyterian Church that evening. In
preaching, song and drama, the story of East Timor was presented
and its struggle was lifted to God in prayer.
Students from the music department of the Presbyterian Bible
College in Hsin-chu offered an anthem and led the congregation's
singing. A bell choir directed by Professor Cheng Li-sun
performed. Organizers also arranged for a child to bring a
sapling to be placed in front of the platform. It represented the
hope and life of East Timor. The Timorese representative spoke
of her people's hopes for new life and the reconstruction of
their nation. A group of young dramatists presented a skit, "The
Voice from East Timor."
The Protestant Church of East Timor has 17,000 members, most
of whom are engaged in agriculture and fishing. This church has
been participating in the CCA for two years.
