National Council of Churches in India calls India and Pakistan for restrain
from war

The Council whole heartedly supported the global, national and regional
initiatives to fight terrorism and build up a violence free society.
Expressing deep concern over the present tension, the President of the
Council, H.G. Geevarghese Mar Coorilose, appealed to India and Pakistan to
use wisdom and avoid the danger of starting a nuclear war where both the
countries will be losers. The Council appealed to all the churches and
civil society in the country to be pro-active in easing the tensions and
building up communities of peace and harmony.

Rev. Dr. Ipe Joseph, General Secretary of the Council along with the
Executive Secretaries stated that India and Pakistan cannot afford a war
while their economies are weak and people are suffering from poverty,
injustice, illiteracy and painful economic conditions. The Council also
stated that the logic of peace through war is not credible and is to be
rejected.

War rhetoric is not an alternative for true patriotism, which enhances peace
in the country and assures protection and safety for its citizens.
