Aberdeen church to tackle sex and violence

[The Scottish Episcopal Church] An Aberdeen church is tackling the thorny
subjects of sex and violence during a week packed with lectures and events.
The Scottish Episcopal church of St John the Evangelist, in St John's Place
off Crown Street, has invited a top professor to talk on the subject of
"Jesus, Sex and Violence" at 7:30pm next Wednesday 22 May. Professor Gordon
Graham, Regius Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Aberdeen,
will look at what Jesus has to say on the two controversial topics.

St John's rector, the Revd Isaac Poobalan said, "These are key subjects and
it's important that we talk about them openly. "Some people think the church
is behind the times on sex and violence - but Jesus had a lot to say that is
very relevant to the issues that we all face today."

All are welcome to come to the free event which is part of St John's
week-long Whitsun Festival.

Professor Graham said: "Some Christians condemn sex outside marriage and
homosexual relationships, while others see these as features of the modern
world that have to be accepted, and even celebrated. Some Christians are
pacifists, while others approve of armed struggles on behalf of the poor and
oppressed. We are going to be looking at what the Christian attitude to sex
and violence should be. This lecture focuses on what Jesus actually says and
what he doesn't say on these important topics."
