Kathy Gilbert joins UMNS as news writer

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) - Kathy L. Gilbert, a former staff member of the
United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry, has joined United
Methodist News Service as a news writer.

An active United Methodist, Gilbert joined the denomination's official news
agency June 3. She will cover some of the church's general agencies, monitor
a U.S. geographical jurisdiction, and write features and other enterprise
Since 1994, Gilbert had served as assistant editor on the staff of the
board's Office of Interpretation. While at the board, she worked on
Orientation, an annual magazine for first-year college students, as well as
numerous newsletters and other publications. She previously worked for
several newspapers: the Nashville Banner; the Baton Rouge (La.) Morning
Advocate; the Shreveport (La.) Times; and the Ruston (La.) Daily Leader.
A member of the United Methodist Association of Communicators, she has won
many awards for her feature writing and magazine work.
Gilbert earned her bachelor's degree in journalism from Louisiana Tech
University in Ruston.

She is a member of Belle Meade United Methodist Church in Nashville, where
she serves on the communications committee.

Nashville-based United Methodist News Service, a unit of United Methodist
Communications, also has offices in New York and Washington. It provides
services to both church and public news media. It distributes by e-mail more
than 600 full-length stories, features and commentaries annually, along with
photographs, weekly news summaries, and monthly Spanish- and Korean-language
