ELCA LENOIR-RHYNE COLLEGE NAMES INTERIM PRESIDENT

     CHICAGO (ELCA) -- Dr. Norman D. Fintel has been named interim
president of Lenoir-Rhyne College.  Lenoir-Rhyne, Hickory, N.C., is
one of 28 colleges and universities of the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America (ELCA).
     Fintel, a retired college president from Salem, Va., will serve
until the board chooses a permanent replacement for Dr. Ryan LaHurd.
LaHurd resigned May 31 to become executive director of the Near East
Foundation, New York.
     "I have a high regard for Ryan LaHurd and his successful
tenure," said Fintel.  "My challenge is to keep the momentum and
prepare the college for its new president."
     Fintel has an extensive background with colleges across the
nation.  From 1975 to 1989, he served as president of Roanoke
College, Salem, Va.  He has also served as a planning consultant with
Texas Lutheran University, Seguin, Texas, interim president of
Rockford College, Rockford, Ill., and executive assistant to the
president at California Lutheran University, Thousand Oaks, Calif.
     Fintel earned a bachelor's degree from Wartburg College,
Waverly, Iowa, a master's degree in journalism from the University of
Wisconsin, Madison, Wis., and a doctorate in education from the
University of Minnesota, Minneapolis.
     Roanoke College, Texas Lutheran University, California Lutheran
University and Wartburg College are affiliated with the ELCA.
     Fintel and his wife, Jo, have three children and nine
grandchildren. They will arrive in Hickory on Aug. 1 and plan to live
in the president's home on campus while the board of trustees
searches for a  permanent president.
